A tweet up is an idea that could appeal to you if you want to find a new way of meeting your social media followers. It can work really well for association events. But of course the idea can be applied to other events and especially the public facing ones.
A tweet up is basically a small get together which brings people who met online (usually through twitter) together, to meet face to face. For some organisations having a tweet up is another tool for the marketing campaign.
Tweet Ups can be a lot of fun and if you decide to host one then here are 3 Tips to help you along the way.
1. Decide on the tweet up organiser
Make sure there is an actual tweet up organiser (it sounds obvious but there can be lots of people who express a desire to get involved but then little happens).
Make it clear who the organiser is and who is in charge.
2. Choose your Date, Time and Location
In your various twitter chats you will have probably been provided with clues about the events your fellow tweeters are going to or when they will be in your town.
Meeting at an exhibition can be a good way to start as your online friends may have already decided they were going to the show anyway.
One of the best tweet ups I went to was at a very popular Trade Show. Everyone was told the tweet up would be at a rather large exhibition stand. We managed to find each other and this was despite the fact that the stand was very busy. I think some of us looked at the people and then made connections from having previously seen their online avatars. Our group of tweeters met face to face and we marked the occasion by taking several photos as a memory. And of course we tweeted the photos out whilst at the exhibition stand which attracted more people to come over and say hello. It was great to finally meet people face to face and it also meant we could have conversations which went beyond 140 characters.
3. Market your Tweet Up
Open your communication channels and let people know about your tweet up.
Don’t hide it.
You could create a new hashtag just for your tweet up.
Build the excitement and keep spreading the word.
